Director of Communications
Job Description:
The Public Interest Legal Foundation, the nation’s most active public interest law firm focused on election law, voter fraud, and election integrity, seeks a Director of Communications to lead the organization’s media outreach and communications strategy.
This role focuses on securing earned media coverage, building relationships with reporters, and translating PILF’s litigation and research into clear stories for the press.
The Director of Communications will work closely with attorneys and leadership to translate complex legal developments into compelling stories for the media and key audiences.
The position is based in our office near the King Street Metro in historic Old Town Alexandria, VA. PILF offers a collaborative workplace and the opportunity to shape communications strategy for a nationally recognized public interest law firm.
Candidates with at least 4–6 years of communications, journalism, or media relations experience are especially encouraged to apply.
This role focuses primarily on earned media and reporter engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Media Strategy and Outreach
- Develop and implement a media outreach strategy to elevate PILF’s work
- Pitch reporters and secure media placements in print, radio, and digital outlets
- Identify opportunities in the news cycle to highlight PILF litigation and advocacy
- Draft press releases, media statements, and advisories based on legal filings and court developments
- Serve as a primary communications liaison between attorneys and media
Communications Leadership
- Manage media lists and track press coverage
- Ensure consistent messaging across all communications channels
- Collaborate with development and leadership teams on messaging and outreach strategies
- Oversee social media content highlighting legal work and media coverage
- Review digital advertising placements when needed
Media Amplification and Content
- Share earned media placements and litigation updates across PILF’s digital channels
- Draft short posts highlighting press coverage and key developments in PILF cases
- Maintain an organized archive of media coverage and communications materials
Qualifications:
- 4+ years of communications experience, with a strong focus on earned media and media relations
- Demonstrated success securing press coverage
- Exceptional writing and editing skills
- Experience in public policy, government, legal communications, or advocacy organizations preferred
- Ability to translate complex legal or policy issues into clear messaging
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Appreciation for American constitutional principles and the organization’s mission
- Candidates with backgrounds in journalism, communications, media relations, or marketing—and roles that require strong writing—are encouraged to apply.
Salary:
$90,000–$135,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
This is a full-time, permanent position with medical and dental benefits, a generous vacation package, and paid holidays.
Location:
This role is based in our Old Town, Alexandria office, a short walk from the King Street Metro, Amtrak, and VRE stations.
Partial remote arrangements may be considered for exceptional candidates who meet all requirements.
