SCOTUS Cites Former AG Meese in Birthright Citizenship Ruling

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 30, 2026) – The Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) filed an amicus curiae brief on behalf of former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III in lawsuits seeking to block President Trump’s recent birthright citizenship Executive Order 14160. In Trump v. Barbara (2025), PILF’s brief on page 4 was cited on page 23 in Justice Thomas’ dissent:

Temporary visitors domiciled in a foreign country remained subject to a foreign power. See Part I–B–2, supra. The Civil Rights Act therefore “intentionally excluded” children of foreign temporary visitors. Brief for Former United States Attorney General Edwin Meese III as Amicus Curiae 4.”

“We’re disappointed by the Supreme Court’s core ruling, but grateful to Justices Thomas and Gorsuch for taking notice of former U.S. Attorney General Meese’s advice, reminding the Court of the limits of the Civil Rights Act for foreign visitors subject to other governments.” said J. Christian Adams, PILF President and General Counsel.
