In this episode of Protecting Your Vote, J. Christian Adams talks with Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose as early voting gets underway. A Green Beret who was deployed earlier this year, Sec. LaRose explains how his service led him into election law. It started in 2011, when he was the only veteran in the state senate and was asked to improve overseas voting. He describes how his office supports military voters and connects with unit voting assistance officers, giving them access to valuable resources like “Military Ready to Vote” packets at pre-deployment training.

His best advice is for family members to email or text deployed loved ones a reminder to request their ballots. Secretary LaRose also discusses absentee ballots, which must now arrive by the time polls close on Election Day, with a narrow exception for military and overseas voters. LaRose also describes a large effort to clean up voter-roll data, including fixing typos and missing birth dates and checking records against the Social Security and BMV data.

Tune in for a timely discussion that connects our nation’s founding principles with the work still needed to protect the right to vote today.
