BREAKING: PILF Win Forces Green Blay Clerk to Follow the Law

The Wisconsin Election Commission found City of Green Bay Clerk Celestine Jeffreys was ignoring mandatory Election Day Registration safeguards

(Green Bay, WI) – November 4, 2024: The Public Interest Legal Foundation filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) over the City of Green Bay Clerk Celestine Jeffreys’s flagrantly ignoring laws governing Election Day Registration. Now, WEC issued an order to force her to comply with Wisconsin law.

The Commission ordered Jeffreys to comply by performing statutory audits of addresses used by voters who registered on Election Day. Any addresses where it appears voters do not live must be investigated and referred to country prosecutors, where required.

During the proceedings, Jeffreys admitted to WEC that she was not following the law.  She claimed she had a “lack of awareness” about the law. WEC acknowledged that “Clerk Jeffreys admits in her response that she has not been following the statutory requirements in Wis. Stat. § 6.56(3), as alleged, during the identified elections.”

After the 2024 Presidential election, PILF will investigate whether election clerks are following the law to audit Election Day registrations. This will ensure that the laws designed to root out fraud are followed.

This is a win for the rule of law,” said PILF President J. Christian Adams. “Following the election, PILF will conduct a full investigation to ensure election officials performed the mandatory audit of all addresses provided at the polls on Election Day and referred individuals who gave fake addresses to prosecutors. Nobody should think they can use Election Day Registration to cast a fraudulent ballot and get away with it.”

The Foundation has an ongoing lawsuit against WEC for concealing records relating to the creation of the guidance given to election officials for how to process Election Day Registrations.
